Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that offers superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 specifies three subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each having distinct Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be provided as UNS S40900. It is produced with enhanced formability properties, known in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form.'

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, widely recognized for its versatility and strength. Primarily used in automotive exhaust systems, this grade is ideal for applications that value mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability over aesthetic appeal, especially at elevated temperatures.
- In compliance with ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, Grade 409 now encompasses sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930, offering tailored solutions for various applications.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to different extents using titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Each variant can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409) under ASTM A268M, which specifically covers standard Grade 409 tubing.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 exhibits commendable resistance to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. Although it may develop a light surface rust in most environments, this layer acts as a barrier against further corrosion. However, it's not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is on par with 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but lower than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C, though these limits can vary based on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- Annealing should be done by heating the material to 790-900°C and cooling it in the air. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is straightforward to weld, although a pre-heat of 150-260°C is recommended. While you can use Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified under AS 1554.6 for a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
For welding small sections, post-weld annealing is unnecessary. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To minimize the impacts of grain formation, ensure all welding is performed with minimal heat input.

Grade 409 is commonly used in automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M defines the parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing, while ASTM A240M specifies the composition for additional grades in coil and sheet applications. Other specifications may include similar but not identical properties.
Forming:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is similar to that of carbon steel.
