GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that combines excellent corrosion resistance and formability with usable mechanical properties. Because of its resistance to it can be used in a variety of chemical applications, but automobile trim and appliance components are the most common.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining version of this grade, which comes in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, with the same useful set of characteristics. The molybdenum component increases corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M specifies the characteristics of 430 for flat rolled products (plate, sheet, and coil). Other products, like as forgings and bar, have similar but not identical qualities, according to their specifications. The properties of Grade 430F are given for bar in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material exhibits good resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments such as and some organic acids. Highest levels of corrosion resistance are achieved when highly polished or ground. Overall, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to that of grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, exhibits significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, as do the other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service, grade 430 resists oxidation. This grade may require extended heating in the 400-600°C range before becoming brittle at room temperature. Annealing can be used to get rid of this effect.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C and then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical anneal - Heat to 760-815°C and then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be alleviated with a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C, ensuring increased durability and performance.
- It's important to note that grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- This grade is notably easier to machine than the standard austenitic grades such as 304, offering more convenience during the process.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool, which must be managed.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn present a significantly easier machining experience compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, substantially simplifies the machining process.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate facilitates bending and forming operations, making it easier compared to grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility restricts its application in very severe operations.
- For severe bends, it is advisable to orient the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Despite the challenges, severe cold heading of 430 wire remains possible.
