904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product that can withstand severe corrosion. It has strong corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon level. This high alloy stainless steel contains copper, which improves its resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic and has outstanding formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. 904L grade contains a high concentration of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel is highly resistant to hot seawater and chloride attack. Due to the high nickel content in its composition, 904L grade stainless steel resists stress corrosion cracking exceptionally well. Additionally, the inclusion of copper in the alloy enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel is superior compared to normal 316L austenitic steel but falls between super austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum. For the highest resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive settings, this grade must undergo solution treatment following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steels tube possess exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high resistance to stress corrosion cracking in this grade is attributed to its substantial nickel content. Furthermore, the inclusion of copper bolsters its resilience against sulphuric acid and various reducing agents in both aggressive and mild environments.
Grade 904L boasts corrosion resistance that sits between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. While it is less resistant than molybdenum-free grades 304L and 310L, it must undergo solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer commendable oxidation resistance. However, its structural integrity diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly surpassing 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening the steel.
Welding of grade 904L stainless steels can be efficiently performed using conventional methods without necessitating pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. However, this grade is susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods, compliant with AS 1554.6, are recommended for welding.
Grade 904L stainless steels tubes are high purity steels with minimal sulfur content, allowing for standard machining methods. These grades can be easily bent to a small radius in cold conditions. Although subsequent annealing is typically unnecessary, it is advisable when fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Grade 904L stainless steels tubes find usage in a variety of applications, including:
