No.2D	Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B	After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.

China's Premier Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet Grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high-alloy, low-carbon steel. Enhanced with copper, this grade offers superior resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid, and exhibits excellent defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade is renowned for its outstanding formability and weldability, maintaining its non-magnetic properties under all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, Grade 904L showcases exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• The 904L alloy, imbued with significant amounts of costly nickel and molybdenum, has historically excelled in various applications. Nowadays, Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205), offering similar performance at a lower cost, is more frequently utilized, leading to a decreased demand for 904L.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Originally engineered to combat sulfuric acid, 904L's exceptional resilience extends to numerous challenging environments. It resists warm seawater and high chloride conditions, boasting a PRE of 35. Its elevated nickel content affords superior protection against stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. With significant copper presence, 904L excels against sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in harsh 'mid concentration' scenarios.
• 904L's corrosion resistance situates it between the conventional austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades, which incorporate 6% molybdenum and similar content. Its performance is thus intermediate yet robust.
• In comparison to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L displays superior resistance to aggressive environments.
• To achieve optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking, particularly in demanding conditions, 904L should undergo solution treatment after cold working.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L exhibits excellent oxidation resistance but may suffer structural instability at higher temperatures, such as the precipitation of brittle sigma phases. It is advisable not to use 904L above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies its design stress values at 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. Note that 904L cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L is weldable with all common techniques, although caution is required due to its fully austenitic solidification, which makes it prone to heat cracking, especially in confined weldments. Avoid pre-heating, and post-weld heat treatment is usually unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for 904L welding.

Fabrication:

• 904L, being a high-purity, low-sulfur grade, does not machine as easily as grades optimized for machinability. Nonetheless, it can be machined using conventional methods. Cold forming to achieve a small radius of bend is straightforward. Post-fabrication annealing is generally unnecessary unless the end-use involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.

Typical Applications:

• 904L finds applications in the processing of sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and electrostatic precipitator wires.

Specified Properties:

• As per ASTM A240M, these properties pertain to flat-rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other products such as pipes, tubes, and bars have similar, though slightly varied, properties as outlined in their respective specifications.
