904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product with exceptional resistance to severe corrosion. This product stands out for its formidable corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel featuring low carbon content. Enriched with copper, it boasts heightened resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. This steel also excels in resisting stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic with superior formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, 904L contains high concentrations of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel offers remarkable resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content ensures exceptional stress corrosion cracking resistance. The copper addition enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. Corrosion resistance of 904L lies between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. In sensitive environments, post-cold working solution treatment maximizes resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes excel in resisting warm seawater and chloride attack, thanks to their high nickel content. Additionally, the presence of copper endows these tubes with remarkable resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents across both aggressive and mild environments.
Grade 904L's corrosion resistance is positioned between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. While less resistant than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L requires solution treatment after cold working to achieve peak stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical conditions.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer strong oxidation resistance, but their structural stability diminishes significantly at temperatures above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment effectively hardens the grades.
The welding of grade 904L stainless steels can be accomplished via all standard methods without the need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. However, hot cracking can occur in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods are recommended for welding, adhering to AS 1554.6 standards.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low *** content, making them suitable for machining using traditional methods. These grades can be easily bent to small radii under cold conditions. Though subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it should be performed if the fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
