CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 exhibits superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, ensuring longevity in corrosive environments.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the upper-temperature limit for Alloy 2205 is 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this can cause embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be provided in the cold-worked condition with a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming, though its high work-hardening rate may necessitate intermediate anneals. Annealing is also recommended after hot or cold forming to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unmatched, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets crucial for tube and pipe manufacturing. We proudly boast one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a superior duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, its yield strength is double that of standard austenitic grades. This material exhibits unparalleled fatigue strength and boasts exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion under the most demanding conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature for Duplex 2205 between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges may risk cracking due to temperature disparities.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases excellent formability across various manufacturing processes. However, the high strength of Duplex 2205 can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the increased springback due to this grade's robust strength must be considered.
Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to machine compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is as short as possible to maintain a sharp edge while providing sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so the depth of cut consistently remains below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
