STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462
CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive and acidic solutions.
- Outstanding resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective up to temperatures of approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite enhances Duplex 2205's performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is subject to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even briefly. Thus, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, welding should not be performed without filler metal, as this may lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, but it does work-harden effectively.
- Special care is needed to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the work piece is not compact, the edges might cool significantly faster than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in the cooler areas.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent formability across various fabrication processes. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even if the equipment is adequately powered, one must account for increased spring-back due to the grade's formidable strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to machine than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear. Recommended machining guidelines include: A) Utilize robust, rigid machines with exceptionally strong and secure mounting for both tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extension as short as possible, C) Employ a nose radius on the tool no larger than necessary for carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure the depth of cut penetrates below the work-hardened layer created by previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, which significantly enhances performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. This alloy's dispersed austenite/ferrite microstructure, combined with its alloying additives, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 maintains acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C, though it can become brittle with prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C. Stainless steel strips, coils, and sheets made from Type 2205 are suitable for a wide array of applications.
Common Surface Finishes of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary based on the methods used in cold rolling and subsequent surface treatments. Some of the common surface treatments for stainless steel coils include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among others:
- NO.1: This surface finish is achieved through hot rolling, followed by heat treatment and pickling of the stainless steel strip. It effectively removes the black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment through pickling or similar processes. The No. 1 surface is silvery white with a matte finish and is primarily used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries that do not require high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and large containers.
- 2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B surface undergoes smoothing with a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value, as measured by equipment, ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, which is typical for most processing types. This versatile surface finish is suitable for industries such as chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and is widely used in building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, which are essential for items requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. This surface utilizes the work-hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold working methods like rolling. Unlike the 2B base surface, the hard material undergoes gentle rolling by a few percent to tens of percent, without post-rolling annealing. Consequently, the TR hard surface is the rolled surface achieved through the cold rolling process.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a state-of-the-art bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled as it progresses along the line at an impressive speed of 60-80m/min. The result? A pristine 2H re-rolled bright surface finish.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an exceptional polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. Achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface and then sanding with a 150-180# grit belt, this polished finish has a surface roughness (Ra) between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely embraced in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decor, and containers, No. 4 exemplifies versatile utility.
- HL: The HL surface, widely recognized as a hairline finish, meets the Japanese JIS standard for a continuous hairline abrasive surface, achieved with a 150-240# abrasive belt. Despite ambiguous restrictions under the Chinese GB3280 standard, HL's elegant finish is a favored choice for architectural decorations like elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhanced version of No. 4, polished further with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as per the GB2477 standard. This finish offers a refined metallic luster, softness, subtle reflection, and non-imaging properties, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies.
- BA: BA stands for Bright Annealed-a surface treated with brilliant heat post-cold rolling. Conducted in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, the BA process maintains the cold-rolled gloss, further polished by a high-precision roller to enhance brightness. With surface roughness between 0.05-0.1μm, the BA finish is nearly mirror-like, suitable for applications in food utensils, household appliances, medical devices, automotive parts, and decorative items.
- No. 8: Known for its mirror surface and maximum reflectivity free of abrasive particles, the No. 8 finish is synonymous with the 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry. Leveraging BA material for mirror processing yields a stunning, reflective surface, perfect for building entrances and interior decor.
