Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy specifically designed to conserve nickel. This cost-effective alternative to Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304 replaces nickel with manganese and nitrogen. Although it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it can achieve high tensile strength through cold working. In its annealed state, Type 201 is non-magnetic but becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is frequently used in appliances, kitchen equipment, automotive parts, and more due to its structural strength. However, it may not be suitable for outdoor structural applications due to its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater.
