CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• The 316 stainless steel offers superior resistance compared to 304, thanks to its higher chromium and molybdenum content. This makes it highly durable in various atmospheric conditions and numerous corrosive environments.
  The enhanced composition ensures strength and longevity.
• However, it is vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride conditions and stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• It demonstrates remarkable resistance to potable water with up to 1000mg/L chlorides at room temperature, reducing to about 500mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
  A reliable choice for many applications.
• Widely recognized as the "marine grade stainless steel," although it is not fully resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to 1600°F (870°C) for intermittent use and up to 1700°F (925°C) for continuous service.
• Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasts outstanding weldability by all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, which is not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing process should be conducted within a temperature range of 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Heat treatment does not harden this alloy.
• Special considerations are required to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Industry experts advise a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
• Maximum corrosion resistance can be achieved with a final annealing of the forgings.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• The 316/316L types are incredibly tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
  These procedures can be executed without much difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Compared to Type 304, Type 316/316L is slightly more challenging to machine due to its toughness.
• The machining process produces tough and robust chip characteristics.
• It is recommended to use chip breakers and curlers.
• Utilize the largest possible tooling and ample amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract the rapid work hardening of 316/316L.
