PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat the alloy uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch to ensure thorough heating and optimal forging conditions.
  • The preferred temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic, ensuring the best formability.
  • To achieve the best condition for subsequent hardening operations, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • In its annealed (solution treated) condition, Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild cold forming operations due to its inherent hardness.
