Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel known for its robustness. This versatile grade is predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems. It is the material of choice for applications where mechanical strength, superior corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability are essential, even at elevated temperatures, surpassing aesthetic considerations.
- According to ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, sub-grades such as S40910, S40920, and S40930 have now replaced the generic grade 409 designation.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with the inclusion of titanium, niobium, or their combinations. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). For tubing applications, ASTM A268M still lists the standard Grade 409.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers commendable resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. Typically, a light surface rust forms, acting as a shield against further corrosion, although it does not enhance aesthetic value. Its corrosion resistance is on par with 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades like 410, yet lower than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat resistance
- 409 demonstrates impressive resistance to scaling, enduring intermittent service temperatures up to 815°C and continuous service temperatures up to 675°C. These thresholds can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900 degrees Celsius and cool with air. It is important to note that this grade cannot be toughened through heat treatment.
Welding
- 409 is easily weldable. Pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While electrodes or filler rods of Grade 409 or Grade 430 can be utilized, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified per AS 1554.6 for superior ductility in welds.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility, ensuring structural integrity.
For smaller sections, post-weld annealing is not necessary. Automotive exhaust tubing typically utilizes autogenous welding, eliminating the need for filler metal.
To maintain optimal grain structure, welding should be executed with minimal heat.
Typical Applications
Widely used in automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for annealed tubing in Grade 409. ASTM A240M specifies compositions of additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other items may feature similar, though not identical, properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch formed, and drawn. Its formability is akin to that of carbon steel, making it highly versatile in various manufacturing processes.
