Surface Description of the Stainless Steel Plate

Finish Designation Method and degree of finish
No.1 After hot rolling, heat treatment, pickling or other equivalent treatment is applied.
No.2D Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3 Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.
No.4 General 150-180 grit finish; used for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#240 240 grit finish; used when a finer finish than No. 4 is required; typically for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#320 320 grit finish polished product.
HL This finish is performed by continuous linear polishing using an abrasive of appropriate grain size; mainly used for architectural applications.
BA Achieved by performing bright annealing after cold rolling and then skin pass rolling to obtain even greater reflectance; provides excellent corrosion resistance; used for household appliances, kitchen equipment, and automobiles.
8K Through multiple grinding, it achieves very high brightness and smoothness, like a mirror.

General Properties
Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate is a versatile and hardenable martensitic stainless steel bar, a sophisticated derivative of Alloy 410. It boasts a minimum of 12% chromium, ensuring robust corrosion resistance. The inclusion of more carbon compared to Alloy 410 aims to amplify strength and hardness. Post-annealing, it retains good ductility, but it can be hardened to an impressive Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, the highest among the 12% chromium grades. Due to its superior hardening properties, welding is infrequent, but feasible. While developed for unparalleled hardness, martensitic stainless steels may sacrifice certain other attributes. Corrosion resistance is marginally lower than traditional austenitic grades, and functionality is constrained by diminishing ductility at sub-zero temperatures and reduced strength from over-tempering at elevated temperatures. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and the surface is meticulously ground or polished.

Applications:
420 stainless steel is the go-to choice for applications demanding stellar corrosion resistance coupled with exceptional hardness. It is generally unsuitable for use at temperatures exceeding 800°F (427°C) due to rapid hardening and compromised corrosion resistance. Prominent applications for 420 alloy include:

Slightly less resistant compared to austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys

Heat resistance:
Not advisable for use above pertinent tempering temperatures due to diminished mechanical properties

Preheat the material to 300-400°F before welding

Recommend a gradual ramp-up to 1400°F and then to 2000-2200°F

Reheating is essential to maintain working temperatures above 1600°F
Cold Working
Can endure only light cold working.
Aggressive forming can lead to cracking.
Annealing
Anneal at 1550-1650°F (843-900°C)
