Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy engineered to conserve nickel, offering an economical alternative to typical Cr-Ni stainless steels such as 301 and 304. Manganese and nitrogen replace the nickel in this composition. While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Type 201 achieves high tensile strength through cold working. It is non-magnetic when annealed but becomes magnetic after cold working. The 201 grade is perfect for mid-range applications such as appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment, as well as automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trims. However, its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion makes it less suitable for certain outdoor structural applications, especially near seawater.
