Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a super duplex steel with low carbon content (up to 0.03%), chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Duplex 2507 stainless steel is meticulously engineered to meet the stringent requirements of applications demanding exceptional strength and unparalleled corrosion resistance. These versatile applications span across chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater systems. This steel boasts remarkable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. Owing to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen composition, it offers outstanding resilience against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is typically manufactured using state-of-the-art techniques akin to other high-alloy steels. The journey begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and alloyed. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. Here, crucial processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is generally introduced to the steel. Post this phase, the steel is directed to the ladle furnace for fine-tuning of inclusions, ensuring optimal quality.
- Following these initial steps, the molten steel moves to the casting phase, which can yield either solitary ingots (large metal blocks) or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms are subjected to additional refining through reheating followed by forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a heat treatment known as solution annealing is employed, succeeded by a rapid water quenching process.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be crafted using both hot and cold forming processes. For hot forming, the temperatures should range between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing process at a minimum temperature of 1052-1125 °C, followed by a swift water quench is necessary. Cold forming methods such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing also necessitate subsequent heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel stands out as a super duplex stainless steel, integrating the microstructure of ferrite and austenite in almost equal proportions. This balanced blend endows duplex stainless steels with elevated corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Despite their shared attributes, different duplex steel grades offer varying levels of corrosion resistance. While these steels excel at resisting localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the precise resistance level hinges on the grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range. Notably, super duplex stainless steels possess a PREN range of 38 to 45.
