904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a premium high-alloy austenitic product engineered for exceptional corrosion resistance. Its robust formulation ensures superior durability against extreme corrosive environments.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized, low-carbon austenitic steel enriched with copper, enhancing its resistance to potent reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. This high-alloy steel is immune to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic and superbly formable, 904L stainless steel boasts excellent toughness and weldability. Infused with costly molybdenum and nickel elements, it delivers remarkable performance.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. Its high nickel content fortifies its defense against stress corrosion cracking. The inclusion of copper further enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in various environments. Its corrosion resistance is superior to standard 316L but slightly below super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum. Post-cold working solution treatment is essential for peak stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive conditions.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are exceptionally resistant to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content in grade 904L's composition significantly enhances its resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the integration of copper bolsters its resilience against sulfuric acid and various reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stands between super austenitic grades (with 6% molybdenum) and the standard 316L austenitic grades. However, grade 904L is less resistant compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments, this steel grade requires solution treatment following cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit good oxidation resistance. However, its structural stability diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be solution heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening these grades.
Welding grade 904L stainless steels can be executed using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, this grade may experience hot cracking in constrained weldments. For optimal results, grade 904L electrodes and rods should be used, adhering to AS 1554.6 standards.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low sulfur content. They are machinable using standard methods and can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While annealing is not usually necessary, it should be performed when fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
