Type 321 stainless steel is a distinguished austenitic steel, offering many of the same properties as Type 304 but with enhanced titanium and carbon content. Type 321 delivers superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, alongside exceptional toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. Renowned for its resilience against oxidation and corrosion, the titanium in 321 stainless steel offers: Robust protection against harmful carbide precipitation in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the weld. Partial defense against intergranular corrosion. Mitigation of embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. 321H stainless steel is often deployed in environments where parts face temperatures suitable for carbide precipitation (800°F-1500°F) and exposure to corrosive conditions. This steel grade is similar to 304 but possesses more nickel and is stabilized with titanium. Titanium preferentially binds with carbon in the steel, preventing chromium carbides from forming at grain boundaries, thus maintaining corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium depletion near grain borders during exposure to critical temperatures. This grade excels in cold working, weldability, and rarely needs post-weld annealing to sustain its outstanding performance in various corrosive environments.
