Type 321 stainless steel is a distinguished austenitic steel, offering many of the same properties as Type 304 but with enhanced titanium and carbon content. Type 321 delivers superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, alongside exceptional toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. Renowned for its resilience against oxidation and corrosion, the titanium in 321 stainless steel offers: Robust protection against harmful carbide precipitation in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the weld. Partial defense against intergranular corrosion. Mitigation of embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. 321H stainless steel is often deployed in environments where parts face temperatures suitable for carbide precipitation (800°F-1500°F) and exposure to corrosive conditions. This steel grade is similar to 304 but possesses more nickel and is stabilized with titanium. Titanium preferentially binds with carbon in the steel, preventing chromium carbides from forming at grain boundaries, thus maintaining corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium depletion near grain borders during exposure to critical temperatures. This grade excels in cold working, weldability, and rarely needs post-weld annealing to sustain its outstanding performance in various corrosive environments.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

• 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel distinguished by its exceptional corrosion resistance. This alloy excels in resisting intergranular corrosion even after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). It can withstand oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and showcases superior creep and stress rupture characteristics compared to 304 and 304L stainless steel pipes, along with remarkable low-temperature toughness.
• The 321H Stainless Steel Tube (UNS S 32109) is a high-carbon variant of the alloy (0.04 - 0.10) engineered for enhanced creep resistance and strength in temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Often, the carbon content enables dual certification.
• Alloy 321 can only be strengthened through cold working and not by heat treatment. It is easily weldable and processable using standard shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance, comparable to 304.
• Designed for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
• Functional in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H can be welded and processed effortlessly using standard shop fabrication techniques.

HOT FORMING

• Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes are between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• The alloy is unsuitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
• To regain maximum corrosion resistance, the material must be water quenched or fully annealed after working.

COLD FORMING

• Highly ductile, allowing for easy forming.

WELDING

• Easily welded by most standard processes.
• Post-weld heat treatment is not required.

MACHINING

• The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but similar to 304.
