How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The manufacture of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other advanced high-alloy steels. Beginning in an electric arc furnace, scrap steel is melted and alloyed with precision. The molten steel then advances to the AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where critical processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas elimination transpire.
- Nitrogen is typically incorporated during the AOD process. The treated steel proceeds to the ladle furnace, where the inclusion content is meticulously adjusted.
- Post these initial stages, the molten steel transitions to the casting phase, producing either solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solidified forms are further processed through reheating and forging or rolling to the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a heat treatment known as solution annealing is administered, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials are adaptable to both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, temperatures between 1024 °C and 1232 °C are ideal. Post hot forming, solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C, followed by swift water quenching, is necessary. Cold forming processes such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing require subsequent heat treatment, involving solution annealing and quenching to ensure optimal material properties.

- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is categorized as a super duplex stainless steel, exhibiting a dual-phase microstructure that includes both ferrite and austenite in nearly equal proportions.
