What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a super duplex alloy renowned for its low carbon content (up to 0.03%) and an impressive blend of chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). This material is meticulously engineered to meet the rigorous demands of high-strength and high-corrosion-resistance applications, including chemical processing equipment, petrochemical industry components, and marine environments. It exhibits extraordinary resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. The high content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen ensures outstanding protection against pitting, crevice corrosion, and overall wear.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is typically produced using the same techniques as other high-alloy steels. The process begins with melting scrap steel in an electric arc furnace, followed by the addition of the necessary alloys. Once the metal is molten, it is transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. This crucial phase involves decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is usually added to the steel. The molten steel is then transported to the ladle furnace for fine-tuning of inclusions.
- Subsequent to these initial stages, the steel is moved to the casting area to create either solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solidified steel forms are further refined through reheating, forging, or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. Homogeneous internal structure is attained through solution annealing, followed by water quenching.
- Duplex 2507 pipes can be fabricated via hot or cold forming. For hot forming, maintain a temperature between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, perform solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming-covering bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing-requires subsequent heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel, known as a super duplex grade, features a microstructure with balanced amounts of ferrite and austenite, combining the best properties of both. This composition provides excellent corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. However, different grades offer varying degrees of corrosion resistance. While all duplex steels resist localized corrosion like pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the exact resistance level depends on the specific grade and alloy. Duplex steels are categorized by their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number), with super duplex grades ranging from 38 to 45.
