904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a premium high-alloy austenitic product designed to withstand severe corrosion, offering exceptional corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel, a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon level, is enhanced with copper to resist strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. This steel also resists stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic and boasting superior formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, 904L includes high concentrations of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. Its high nickel content provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The addition of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in various environments. 904L offers corrosion resistance between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive settings, 904L must undergo solution treatment after cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride-induced corrosion. Their remarkable stress corrosion cracking resistance stems from the high nickel content in their composition. Additionally, the inclusion of copper enhances their durability against sulphuric acid and other reducing agents, making them effective in both aggressive and mild environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stands between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. While it is less resistant compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, grade 904L requires solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steel offers good oxidation resistance; however, its structural stability diminishes at high temperatures, particularly above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steel can be solution heat-treated between 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. Thermal treatment can be employed to harden these grades.
Welding grade 904L stainless steel can be accomplished using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. However, hot cracking can occur in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods should be used for welding according to AS 1554.6.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low sulfur content, allowing them to be machined using standard methods. They can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is not typically required, it should be performed if the fabrication is done under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
