Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel renowned for its superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. As per ASTM A240, Type 409 stainless steel is classified into three subcategories: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with distinct Ti or Nb stabilization criteria. If not specified by the buyer, any of these compositions can be supplied as UNS S40900. This stainless steel is also available in enhanced formability grades known as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form' within the industry.

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, designed to cater specifically to the rigorous demands of automotive exhaust systems. As a general-purpose chromium stainless steel, it excels in applications that require superior mechanical properties, exceptional corrosion resistance, and reliable weldability, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- The ASTM standards have evolved, and now S40910, S40920, and S40930 are utilized as 'sub-grades' under the overarching Grade 409 category, in accordance with ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to various extents using titanium, niobium, or a combination of both metals. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). Notably, ASTM A268M lists only the standard Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers impressive resistance to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a light surface rust may develop, this layer acts as a barrier to further corrosion, though it may not be suitable for aesthetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is on par with 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades like 410, but falls short of the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance:
- Grade 409 showcases remarkable resistance to scaling, withstanding intermittent service temperatures up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these limits can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to a temperature range of 790-900°C, followed by air cooling. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment methods.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, with a recommended pre-heat range of 150-260°C. While you can use Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods, employing Grade 309 rods or electrodes, as pre-qualified by AS 1554.6, yields a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C significantly enhances weld ductility.
For welding small sections, post-weld annealing is not necessary. In automotive exhaust tubing, welding is typically done without filler metal (autogenously).
To minimize the adverse effects of grain formation, ensure all welding is performed with as little heat input as possible.

Grade 409 is extensively used in automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 in annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M specifies the composition for additional grades applicable to coil and sheet forms. Specifications for other items may include similar yet not identical properties.
Forming:
- 409 stainless steel can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics closely mirror those of carbon steel.
