HEAT TREATMENT

  • For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be done at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
    DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
  • 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool.

In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections yields optimal properties. For larger sections, or if quenching is delayed, the properties may be less than optimal.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution treated and aged condition, it is around Rockwell C 35-39.

Forgeability/Formability

  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is meticulously forged at an impressive temperature of 1,750°F (954°C), with the final forging stage completed at 1,450°F (788°C). For achieving the best mechanical properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is strongly recommended.
  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar poses challenges in forming at room temperature, even in its annealed state. As a solution, severe forming operations like bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. Erosion Corrosion

Titanium exhibits exceptional resistance against erosion in high-velocity water flows.
Seawater velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) have negligible impact on titanium. Even the presence of abrasive particles like sand only minimally affects its corrosion resistance.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Titanium absorbs no significant hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen uptake occurs only if all three of the following conditions are met:
