HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing temperature range: 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C)
  • Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though it does work-harden
  • Special considerations required to accommodate higher thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING

  • Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges may *** due to significant temperature differences.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING

  • The Duplex 2205 stainless steel is recognized for its excellent formability across a spectrum of fabrications. Despite its notable high strength, which can present challenges, the equipment used must have adequate power and make allowances for increased spring-back due to the material's inherent strength.

MACHINABILITY

Working with Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The higher cutting forces required lead to faster tool wear. For best results, consider the following guidelines: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with robust tool and workpiece mounting, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extensions short, C) Employ a nose radius on the tool only as long as necessary to maintain a sharp edge for carbides while ensuring adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to achieve a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

  • NO.1: This surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips to remove black oxide scale formed during these processes. NO.1 surface stands out for its silvery white, matte finish and is highly suited for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant applications where high surface gloss is not required, such as in the alcohol and chemical industries, and for large containers.
  • 2B: The 2B surface, in contrast to the 2D, is further smoothed using a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The typical surface roughness Ra values range from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This adaptable surface is ideal for industries such as chemical processing, papermaking, petroleum, medical applications, and for building curtain walls.
  • TR Hard Surface: This category of stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It is used for applications demanding high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. By leveraging the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of steel plates are enhanced through cold working techniques like rolling. The TR hard surface is achieved by cold rolling the material by a few percent to tens of percent without subsequent annealing, creating a robust surface texture.
  • Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process, ensuring a pristine finish. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled as it travels at 60-80m/min. The outcome of this meticulous process is a 2H re-rolled bright surface, boasting exceptional quality.
  • No. 4: The No. 4 surface delivers a superior polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. Achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B finish, and further refining with a sanding belt of 150-180# grit, this surface offers a surface roughness (Ra) of 0.2 to 1.5μm.   • HL: The HL surface, known as a hairline finish, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous abrasive surface polished with a 150-240# grit belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard lacks specific limitations, the HL finish is celebrated for its architectural elegance, making it perfect for elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
  • No. 6: The No. 6 surface builds upon the No. 4 finish, further enhanced with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive as per the GB2477 standard. This surface exhibits a soft metallic luster, subdued reflection, and non-imaging quality, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary applications.
  • BA: BA, or Bright Annealed, is a surface treated with bright heat post-cold rolling, ensuring it remains oxidation-free and retains the cold-rolled gloss.
