Surface Description of the Stainless Steel Plate

No.2D	Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B	After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3	Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.

• Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 has excellent formability and corrosion resistance, along with practical mechanical qualities. Its ability to withstand *** corrosion makes it invaluable in certain chemical applications. However, its primary uses are in appliance parts and car trim.
• For use in automatic screw machines, grade 430F is a more machinable variation of this grade, available in bar form. Grade 434, containing molybdenum, shares the same beneficial characteristics as Grade 430, with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the added molybdenum.
• ASTM A240/A240M delineates the premier qualities of 430 stainless steel for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. These qualities, although not always identical, can be found in other product specifications like bars and forgings. For bars, ASTM A582 provides the distinct characteristics of Grade 430F.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Grade 430 showcases excellent resistance to a plethora of corrosive environments, including *** and several organic acids. Its maximum corrosion resistance is realized when polished or ground to a high finish. In terms of pitting and crevice corrosion, it matches the performance of Grade 304. Like other ferritic grades, Grade 430 is highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking.
• The non-free machining variant, Grade 430F, demonstrates significantly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free machining grades.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Grade 430 withstands oxidation at temperatures up to 870°C during intermittent service and 815°C during continuous service. Prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range may render it brittle at room temperature, an effect that can be mitigated through annealing.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then cool slowly in a furnace to 600°C, followed by rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
• Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C followed by air or water quenching.
• This grade is not hardenable through thermal treatment.

WELDING:

• Pre-heat to 150-200°C before welding if required.
• Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can relieve embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone.
• Grain refinement will not occur.

MACHINING:

• Easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
• Tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool persists.
• Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine than those in the annealed state.
• Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, significantly simplifies machining.

FABRICATION:

• A lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier compared to Grade 304.
• Lower ductility limits very extreme operations.
• Severe bends should be performed with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
• Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
