- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 stainless steel boasts excellent formability, corrosion resistance, and practical mechanical properties. Its ability to resist *** corrosion makes it valuable in certain chemical applications, with primary uses in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- For use in automatic screw machines, grade 430F offers increased machinability and is available in bar form. Grade 434 includes molybdenum, providing enhanced corrosion resistance while retaining the beneficial properties of Grade 430.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 showcases commendable resistance to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments such as *** and select organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the surface is highly polished or ground. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is on par with Grade 304. Like other ferritic grades, 430 demonstrates very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F sees a marked reduction in resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range may render it brittle at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C followed by rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C might induce embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing: Heat to 760-815°C then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not amenable to hardening by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Preheat to 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can alleviate embrittlement in weld metal and the heat-affected zone.
- Grain refinement is not achievable.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and tool pick-up.
- Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine than those in the annealed state.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier than Grade 304.
- Its lower ductility limits very severe forming operations.
- Severe bends should be oriented perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
