Type 321 stainless steel is a remarkable austenitic steel that closely mirrors the attributes of Type 304, but with a higher titanium and carbon content. This enhanced composition grants it superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, alongside unparalleled toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. The inclusion of titanium delivers various appealing benefits: it prevents detrimental carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welds, offers substantial protection against intergranular corrosion, and mitigates embrittlement in susceptible weld areas. Type 321H stainless steel shines in applications subjected to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and corrosive environments. Compared to 304 stainless steel, 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts preferentially with carbon, preventing the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries. This preserves corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium consumption near grain borders during critical temperature exposure. The grade responds well to cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely necessitates post-weld annealing to maintain its exceptional performance across various corrosive settings.

GENERAL PROPERTIES
- 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its excellent overall corrosion resistance. It boasts superior intergranular corrosion resistance after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). This alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and demonstrates better creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes, with impressive low-temperature toughness.
- Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S32109) is a higher carbon content variant of this alloy (0.04 - 0.10), engineered for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Typically, the carbon content of the plate allows for dual certification.
- Alloy 321 can only be toughened through cold working, not by heat treatment. It is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Exhibits good general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
- Developed for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
- Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
- Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
- Can be utilized in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
- Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
- Ideal for use in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
- Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.
PROCESSING
Alloy 321/H can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
HOT FORMING
- Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes are between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
- The alloy is unsuitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
- Material must undergo water quenching or full annealing after working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.
COLD FORMING
- Highly ductile and easily formed.
WELDING
- Readily welded by most standard processes.
- Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.
MACHINING
- The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but comparable to 304.
