GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is an exceptional two-phase, ferritic, austenitic stainless steel, masterfully alloyed with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that far surpasses standard austenitic grades. Distinguished by its remarkable fatigue strength, it offers unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most arduous conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 demonstrates superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's composition provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Exhibits outstanding resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite presence enhances Duplex 2205's performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for brief periods. Therefore, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 is known for its excellent weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided as it may lead to excessive ferrite.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Although it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special care is required to manage its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the work piece shape is not compact, edges may cool significantly faster than the bulk, posing a risk of cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 stainless steel exhibits exceptional formability across a diverse range of fabrications. The alloy's high strength, however, can present challenges. Even when using equipment with adequate power, it is crucial to account for the increased spring-back effect due to the material's robust strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is marginally more challenging compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, accelerating tool wear. Essential machining guidelines include: A) Utilizing powerful, rigid machines with robust tool and workpiece mounting, B) Minimizing vibration by maintaining a short tool extension, C) Implementing a nose radius on the tool that balances sharpness and strength, especially for carbide tools, and D) Planning machining sequences to ensure cuts penetrate below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a superior duplex stainless steel, enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This unique composition enhances performance and corrosion resistance, outstripping 304 and 316 stainless steels. Its distinct austenite/ferrite microstructure, combined with the alloying elements, provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. While Type 2205 can withstand oxidation up to 980°C, it is recommended only for specific applications due to potential brittleness when exposed to 300°C - 1000°C for extended periods. This versatile material is available in strip, coil, and sheet forms for a multitude of applications.
What Are the Commonly Used Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils?
The surface finish of a 201 stainless steel coil varies based on the cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatments. Available treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other specialized finishes:
- NO.1: NO.1 is the surface obtained post hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips, aimed at eliminating the black oxide scale formed during these processes. It is the premier surface treatment, featuring a silvery white, matte finish. This surface is ideal for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries that do not prioritize high gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical sector, and large container manufacturing.
- 2B: The 2B surface, achieved by light roller smoothing, is brighter than the 2D surface. The Ra value, indicating surface roughness, typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This versatile finish is suitable for a wide array of industries including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, and medical fields, as well as for architectural applications like building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, encompasses grades like 304 and 301, tailored for items demanding significant strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel are harnessed through cold working techniques like rolling to enhance the steel plates' strength and hardness. To replace the smooth 2B base surface, the hard material undergoes gentle rolling by a few percent to tens of percent without post-rolling annealing. Consequently, the TR hard surface reflects the cold rolling process's rolled finish.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the meticulous rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a sophisticated bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is swiftly cooled as it travels at a rapid pace of 60-80 meters per minute. This advanced technique ensures that the surface finish achieves a pristine 2H re-rolled brightness, enhancing both quality and durability.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface exhibits superior polishing effects, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. Achieved by polishing cold-rolled stainless steel plates with a 2D or 2B finish and subsequently refining the processed surface with a 150-180# grit sanding belt, No. 4 surface boasts a surface roughness (Ra) between 0.2 to 1.5μm. Its widespread applications include high-end restaurant and cooking equipment, state-of-the-art medical equipment, sophisticated architectural decorations, durable containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, often referred to as a hairline finish, adheres to the Japanese JIS standard for a continuous hairline abrasive surface polished with a 150-240# abrasive belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard provides less clarity, HL finishes are prized in architectural decoration, particularly in elegant elevator interiors, stylish escalators, and impressive exterior walls.
- No. 6: No. 6 surfaces receive further refinement from No. 4 with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as specified in the GB2477 standard. This produces a surface with a brilliant metallic luster, a soft, non-reflective finish, and no imaging properties. Its exceptional performance makes it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and high-quality cooking supplies.
- BA: BA surfaces are produced by bright heat treatment after cold rolling. This involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and maintain the cold-rolled surface's gloss. Polished with a precision smooth roller, the BA surface achieves an exceptional brightness with a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, almost mirror-like. Such surfaces are perfect for food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and a variety of decorative applications.
- No. 8: No. 8, or the mirror surface, offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles, often referred to in the industry as 8K board. BA material serves as the raw foundation for mirror processing, which only requires polishing. The resultant impeccably polished surface is visually stunning and predominantly used in building entrances and sophisticated interior decorations.
