CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Demonstrates superior resistance to corrosive attacks compared to standard hardenable stainless steels, ensuring durable performance.
  • Exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 across most environmental conditions.
  • Highly resistant to corrosion in industries such as chemical processing, petroleum, dairy, and food processing.
  • May be susceptible to crevice or pitting corrosion when exposed to stagnant seawater for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Capable of being successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance welding techniques.
  • Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding due to potential adverse effects.
  • Generally, pre-heating is not required before welding.
  • Inter-pass temperature must be strictly controlled and limited to 248°F to maintain material integrity.
  • Enhanced toughness can be achieved in welds through complete heat treatment processes.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Offers excellent resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F, making it suitable for high-temperature applications.
  • Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures may lead to reduced toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For optimal forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and maintain temperature for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • The preferred temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic.
  • To ensure ideal conditions for hardening, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to promote grain refinement and enhance material properties.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Due to its hardness in the annealed state, Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild cold forming operations.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary for cold forming operations.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance post-cold forming, re-age the material at the precipitation-hardening temperature.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Can be efficiently machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, ensuring versatility.
