Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most extensively used titanium alloy, representing over 50% of total titanium usage. Typically supplied in the annealed state, it withstands temperatures up to 400°C (750°F). This alloy is welded with matching or ELI filler wire and offers superior strength compared to pure titanium, alongside enhanced stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity). Titanium Welded Pipes
DaXun manufactures premium titanium pipes with diameters ranging from 12.7 mm to 38.1 mm (0.47 in to 1.5 in), wall thicknesses from 0.4 mm to 1.65 mm (0.016 in to 0.065 in), and lengths up to 25000 mm. Our offerings include electrical Gr1, Gr2, and Gr12 titanium alloy pipes, specially designed for engineering and chemical industries. These welded pipes are crafted from flat rolled raw material using advanced automatic tungsten inert gas (argon) welding on electric pipe welders and are heat-treated on the mill line. Each pipe undergoes stringent mechanical testing, precise geometrical measurements, 100% ultrasonic and eddy current testing, and either pneumatic or hydrostatic testing. INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the pinnacle of titanium alloys. As a duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy, it harnesses the power of aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser. This high-strength marvel can operate at cryogenic temperatures up to around 800°F (427°C). It serves not only in annealing, solution treatment, and ageing but also in myriad aerospace applications like compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and critical forgings, all benefiting from an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio.
  • The alloy is initially melted through state-of-the-art methods such as vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM), followed by one or two vacuum arc remelting steps to achieve unparalleled purity and consistency.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • To achieve high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength, annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is employed.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy can undergo various heat treatments to tailor its properties.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), for 1 hour, followed by water quenching
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling
  • In the solution treated and aged condition, optimal properties are achieved, particularly in small cross-sections that are rapidly quenched.
    Larger sections or quench delays may result in properties slightly below the optimal values.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution treated and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are expertly forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For superior results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is known for its challenging formability at room temperature, even post-annealing. However, demanding forming processes such as bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is viable at temperatures ranging from 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steels. Optimal results are achieved with slow speeds, substantial feed rates, robust
    tooling, and generous application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube offers excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-treated forms. Post-weld heat treatment allows for ageing, ensuring the material retains its desirable properties.
  • To prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen during welding, steps should be taken. Fusion welding can be effectively performed within an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield covering the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Additionally, spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be executed without a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to contamination from hydrogen due to improper pickling and absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, and brazing processes. DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 (UNS R56400) is the premier titanium alloy, appreciated for its high strength and versatile applications. It features a duplex alpha+beta structure, stabilized by aluminum and vanadium. This alloy performs exceptionally at low temperatures around 800°F (427°C). Commonly used in annealing, solution treating, and aging processes, it is indispensable in manufacturing compressor blades, disks, jet engine rings, aerospace components, pressure vessels, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and critical forgings demanding a superior strength-to-weight ratio.
The alloy is initially produced through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM) methods. Subsequent remelting is performed in one or two vacuum arc stages.

Heat Treatment

1. **Annealing:** Maintain a temperature range of 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
2. **Stress Relief Annealing:** Set the temperature between 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for a duration of 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cool.
3. **Solution Heat Treating:** Maintain the tube at 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour and quench in water.
4. **Aging:** Achieve optimal properties by sustaining 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, finishing with air cooling.

**Optimum Properties**

Experience superior results with small cross-sections and rapid quenching in the solution-treated and aged state. Note that larger cross-sections or delayed quenching may compromise the ideal properties.

**Hardness**

The typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34 and approximately Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube, is ideally forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A reduction of at least 35% is recommended to achieve the best results.

Hence, severe forming operations like bending or stretching are recommended at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without altering its mechanical properties.
