CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• 316 stainless steel is generally more resistant than 304 in a variety of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media due to its increased chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• However, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• It is considered resistant to potable water containing up to about 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, decreasing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often regarded as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' though not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers greater resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offers excellent weldability by all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, which is not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing should be conducted in the temperature range of 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special consideration must be given to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Both 316 and 316L types are extremely tough and ductile, allowing for easy cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  and bending without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat tougher to machine compared to Type 304 due to its enhanced toughness.
• 316/316L forms tough and strong chips during machining.
• Use chip breakers and curlers for improved performance.
• Employ as large a tool as possible and utilize generous amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds, as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
