CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 exhibits exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure above this temperature can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in its annealed condition and can be supplied in cold-worked conditions with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It retains good toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming but has a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

The Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, prominently featuring 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is double that of regular austenitic grades. This exceptional material also offers superior fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most severe conditions.
Most Duplex 2205 steel pipe manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges may lead to cracking.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across a wide range of manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the additional springback caused by this grade's high strength must be considered.
Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, necessitating higher cutting forces, which accelerates tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Using a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keeping tool extensions short to minimize vibration; C) Ensuring the tool nose radius is kept as short as necessary to maintain a sharp edge and adequate strength; D) Designing the machining sequence to ensure the cut depth remains below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
