GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that masterfully blends excellent corrosion resistance and formability with commendable mechanical properties. Thanks to its robust resistance, it is versatile enough to be utilized in numerous chemical applications. Predominantly, it serves in the manufacturing of automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, crafted in bar form specifically for use in automatic screw machines. Meanwhile, Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, shares the same beneficial characteristics but with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the distinct characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms like forgings and bar exhibit similar qualities as specified by their respective standards. For Grade 430F, properties specific to bar form are defined under ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material exhibits remarkable resistance to a vast array of corrosive environments, including various organic acids. Its corrosion resistance peaks when highly polished or ground, closely matching the pitting and crevice corrosion resistance of Grade 304. As with all ferritic grades, 430 excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F, like other high-sulfur free machining grades, shows notably reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. With extended heating in the 400-600°C range, it may become brittle at room temperature, an effect that can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then cool slowly in furnace to 600°C followed by quick air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C and then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable through thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is necessary, pre-heat at 150-200°C.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be alleviated with a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C, ensuring structural integrity and longevity.
- Grain refinement is not achievable under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- Machining is considerably easier compared to standard austenitic grades like 304, offering smoother operations and efficiency.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool, requiring careful monitoring.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn provide an easier machining experience compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, a free machining variant of 430, offers a significantly easier machining process, enhancing productivity.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of this grade makes bending and forming easier than with grade 304, facilitating more straightforward fabrication.
- However, lower ductility limits very severe operations, necessitating careful planning.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction for optimal results.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable, expanding its application scope.
