Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. The inclusion of copper makes this grade significantly more resistant to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. Moreover, it exhibits robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade possesses outstanding formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic in all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, it boasts exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
- Nickel and molybdenum, two very expensive elements, are present in quite large amounts in 904L. Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) can now be used in many of the applications where this grade has historically performed well at a cheaper cost, hence 904L is used less frequently than it was in the past.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Its excellent resilience to a variety of conditions is in addition to its original development's resistance to sulfuric acid. Warm seawater and other high chloride conditions are well-resistance for the material, as shown by a PRE of 35. Compared to the typical austenitic grades, high nickel concentration produces a significantly superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Sulfuric and other reducing acids are more resistant to copper, especially in the extremely aggressive 'mid concentration' range.
- The corrosion performance of 904L is generally intermediate between that of the ordinary austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades with 6% molybdenum and equivalent content.
- Compared to grades like 304L and 310L that are free of molybdenum, 904L is less resistant to strong.
- After cold work, the steel should be solution treated for optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in demanding situations.
Heat Resistance:
- Strong oxidation resistance, but at higher temperatures suffers from structural instability (precipitation of brittle phases like sigma), just like other highly alloyed grades. It is not recommended to use it above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets the design stress values for 904L at 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding:
- It is possible to successfully weld 904L using all common techniques. Due to its totally austenitic solidification, this grade is prone to heat cracking, especially in restricted weldments, hence caution must be used. It is best not to employ any pre-heat, and post-weld heat treatment is typically not necessary either. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for 904L welding.
Fabrication:
- Because it is a high purity, low *** grade, 904L will not machine as well as other grades that have been specially designed for machinability. It is possible to machine grade 904L using conventional methods, nevertheless. Achieving a tiny radius of bend is easy. For the most part, this is done cold. Although it should be taken into consideration if the fabrication is to be utilised in a location where severe stress corrosion cracking conditions are anticipated, subsequent annealing is typically not necessary.
