Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel tube designed for general-purpose applications, containing 11% chromium. This grade is ideal for scenarios where oxidation and corrosion resistance are paramount, outperforming carbon steel and many coated steels. While 409 offers strong oxidation resistance and excellent formability, its lower chromium content means it doesn't match the corrosion resistance of grades like 304, 430, or 439. However, it exceeds the performance of mild steel. This versatile material can be roll-formed, stretch-bent, deep-drawn, and press-formed, and will not harden after annealing during cold treatments. Suitable for automotive exhaust systems, 409 provides fair weldability but should be avoided in shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone which affects mechanical integrity. In automotive and agricultural industries, its mechanical properties are a boon, effectively resisting corrosion from exhaust gases and high temperatures. Note, however, that 409 is not recommended for decorative purposes as mechanical properties take precedence over appearance.

GENERAL PROPERTIES:
- Alloy 409 is a ferritic stainless steel that has been stabilised with chromium and titanium. Its principal application is automobile exhaust systems. It includes 11% chromium, which is the minimal amount required for the creation of the passive surface coating that provides stainless steels with corrosion resistance. It has strong corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, medium strength, decent formability, and an affordable total price. Alloy 409 resists corrosion more strongly than carbon steel and is used as an alternative to carbon steel in slightly demanding conditions where its high resistance to corrosion and high temperature oxidation provide an advantage. It is often employed in applications where appearance is secondary to mechanical qualities and corrosion resistance.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

- Generally classified as resistant to scaling in intermittent service up to 1499oF (815oC ) and up to 1247oF (675oC) in continuous service
WELDABILITY
- Readily weldable
- Pre-heat of 302 to 500oF (150 to 260oC) is recommended
- Post-weld annealing at 1400 to 1499oF improved weld ductility
- Post-weld annealing is not required when welding thin sections
- Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal
