What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a superior grade of super duplex steel characterized by its low carbon content (up to 0.03%) and high chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%) levels. Engineered for applications that demand exceptional strength and corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 is ideal for chemical process equipment, petrochemical industries, and seawater systems. Its remarkable resilience to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, combined with high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, ensures outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is produced using advanced methods similar to those for other high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and alloyed. The molten steel is then refined in an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, undergoing critical processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas elimination.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to the steel. The refined steel progresses to the ladle furnace for final adjustment of the inclusions.
- After these initial steps, molten steel is cast into ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solid blooms or ingots are reheated and forged or rolled to precise thickness. To ensure a homogeneous internal structure, a heat treatment known as solution annealing is applied, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be fabricated through hot or cold forming processes. For hot forming, the material is heated between 1024 °C and 1232 °C, followed by solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C and a rapid water quench. Cold forming processes like bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing also require subsequent heat treatment with solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as super duplex stainless steel. Duplex stainless steels feature a microstructure with equal parts ferrite and austenite, blending the advantageous properties of both. This unique combination offers high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical strength. However, different grades of duplex steel have varying levels of corrosion resistance. While they generally resist localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the degree of resistance is dependent on the specific grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range. Super duplex stainless steels have a PREN ranging from 38 to 45.
