Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni steels like 301 and 304. With nickel replaced by manganese and nitrogen, Type 201 cannot be hardened by heat treatment but achieves high tensile strength through cold working. In its annealed state, it is non-magnetic, becoming magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is ideal for appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, carriages, and window trims. While its structural strength is impressive, it is not always suited for outdoor structural applications due to its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater exposure.
