Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. This grade boasts significant resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid, thanks to its copper content. Additionally, it provides superior defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• Grade 904L exhibits remarkable formability and weldability, remaining non-magnetic under all circumstances. Its austenitic structure ensures exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• The High Intensity 904L Stainless Steel Plate from Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. features a significant presence of the premium elements nickel and molybdenum, which enhance its superior performance. However, with the advent of Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205), which offers comparable performance at a lower cost, the use of 904L has seen a decline in some applications.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Originally developed for resistance to sulfuric acid, our 904L stainless steel boasts exceptional resilience in a variety of environments. Its high nickel content ensures superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, particularly in aggressive mid-concentration sulfuric and other reducing acid conditions. With a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of 35, this material excels in warm seawater and high chloride settings, outperforming typical austenitic grades.
• 904L's corrosion resistance stands between that of standard austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum. This makes it a versatile choice for applications requiring intermediate corrosion performance.
• When compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L exhibits less resistance to strong corrosive environments.
• For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in challenging conditions, it is essential to solution treat the steel after cold work.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L stainless steel demonstrates robust oxidation resistance. However, like other highly alloyed grades, it suffers from structural instability, such as the precipitation of brittle sigma phases at higher temperatures. Usage above 550°C is not recommended. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code advises design stress values for 904L up to 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing) requires heating to 1090-1175°C followed by rapid cooling. Note that this grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be welded using all common techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, particularly in constrained weldments, necessitating careful handling. Pre-heating is not recommended and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6.

Fabrication:

• While 904L may not machine as easily as other grades designed for machinability due to its high purity and low sulfur content, conventional methods can still be used. Cold forming to achieve a small radius bend is feasible. Although subsequent annealing is not typically required, it should be considered in environments prone to severe stress corrosion cracking.

Typical Applications:

• 904L stainless steel is ideal for use in processing plants for sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plants, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• Per ASTM A240M, the specified properties apply to flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other products like pipes, tubes, and bars have similar, though not always identical, properties as per their respective specifications.
