CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers unparalleled resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this threshold can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It retains good toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be effectively cold-formed; however, due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Annealing is also advised post hot forming or cold forming to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are second to none, featuring state-of-the-art extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We boast one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe, a duplex ferritic-austenitic alloy, boasts an impressive composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, it features a yield strength that is double that of standard austenitic grades. Additionally, it excels in fatigue strength and offers unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most severe conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Ensure that the workpiece is uniformly heated to avoid the risk of cracking in cooler areas.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube stands out for its exceptional formability across diverse manufacturing processes. However, its impressive high strength can pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the increased springback due to the high strength of this grade must be carefully managed.
Machineability of Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, which accelerate tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Employ a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is just enough to maintain carbide sharpness while providing sufficient strength; D) Sequence machining operations so the depth of cut stays below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
