Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube containing 11% chromium, tailored for applications demanding superior oxidation or corrosion resistance where carbon steel and some coated steels fall short. With its robust oxidation resistance and impressive formability, Grade 409 outshines mild steel, although it may lag behind grades like 304, 430, and 439 in corrosion resistance. Perfect for roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming, Grade 409 maintains its properties through annealing and does not harden under cold treatment, be it through warm or roll forming processes such as press or stretch bending. It offers adequate weldability but is not ideal for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, impacting mechanical quality. Widely utilized in automotive exhaust systems and stampings, 409 stainless steel tube's mechanical properties are crucial for automotive and agricultural applications, offering excellent resistance to corrosion from exhaust gases and high temperatures. Although its mechanical properties shine, it is not recommended for decorative use due to its less appealing appearance.
