Type 321 stainless steel, an austenitic alloy, elevates the properties of Type 304 with its enhanced titanium and carbon content. This composition provides superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, along with exceptional toughness at cryogenic temperatures. The presence of titanium prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld, offers partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk areas of the weld. Ideal for high-temperature applications (800°F-1500°F), 321H stainless steel excels in corrosive environments. While sharing similarities with 304 stainless steel, Type 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts with carbon to prevent the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, thus maintaining its corrosion resistance. GENERAL PROPERTIES

• The 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel known for its exceptional corrosion resistance. It boasts high resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). Additionally, this alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and offers superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. It also exhibits excellent low-temperature toughness.
• Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S32109) is a higher carbon content variant of this alloy (0.04 - 0.10), crafted to enhance creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). The carbon content often permits dual certification for the plate.
• Alloy 321 can be strengthened solely through cold working and not by heat treatment. It can be effortlessly welded and processed using conventional shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
• Engineered for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).

• Suitable for use in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.

PROCESSING

HOT FORMING

• Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes range from 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• The alloy is unsuitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
• Material must be water-quenched or fully annealed post-working to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

• Highly ductile and forms effortlessly.

WELDING

MACHINING
