Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel renowned for its superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 outlines three (3) subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with slightly different Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. This material is crafted with enhanced formability properties, often referred to in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form.'

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized, ferritic stainless steel, renowned for its utility in automotive exhaust systems. As a general-purpose chromium stainless steel, it excels in applications where mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability are paramount, even at elevated temperatures.
- ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, have refined Grade 409 into sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930, enhancing its specificity and performance over the generic designation.
- These sub-grades incorporate varying levels of titanium, niobium, or both, ensuring they meet stringent ASTM A268M criteria. Despite their differences, they can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409), with ASTM A268M specifically covering tubes.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers robust resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While it may develop a superficial rust layer, this forms a protective barrier, albeit not ideal for aesthetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is akin to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), yet falls short when compared to the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 maintains its integrity under intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C, contingent on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C followed by air cooling. Note that this grade is not amenable to hardening through heat treatment.
Welding
- 409 is notably weldable, though pre-heating to 150-260°C is advisable. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, using Grade 309 per AS 1554.6 is pre-qualified, producing a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C can significantly enhance weld ductility.
Welding smaller sections does not necessitate post-weld annealing. In automotive exhaust applications, welding is typically performed autogenously, without filler metal.
To mitigate grain formation impacts, all welding should be conducted with minimal heat input.

- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 in annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M details additional grades for coil and sheet. Other specifications may present properties that are similar but not identical.
Forming:
- Grade 409 stainless can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is comparable to that of carbon steel.
