CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• 316 stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 304, thanks to heightened chromium and molybdenum levels.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasts exceptional weldability using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• For heavy welded sections in Grade 316, post-weld annealing enhances corrosion resistance, though it's unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing is effective between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
• Heat treatment does not harden this steel.
• Special measures are required to address the higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature of 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). The best corrosion resistance is achieved with a final anneal after forging.
• Corrosion resistance is obtained if the forgings are given a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types exhibit extreme toughness and ductility, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
