Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube enriched with 11% chromium. This makes it exceptionally suited for applications demanding superior oxidation or corrosion resistance, which carbon steel and certain coated steels fail to offer. The 409 tube boasts robust oxidation resistance and excellent formability; however, its lower chromium concentration results in modest corrosion resistance. While it may not equal the corrosion resistance of grades 304, 430, or 439, its performance surpasses that of mild steel. Versatile in its forming capabilities, 409 can be roll-formed, stretch-bent, deep-drawn, and press-formed. Post-annealing, it does not harden when cold-treated and can be processed using warm and roll-forming methods such as press or stretch bending. With adequate weldability, 409 is ideal for tubing and stampings in automotive exhaust systems. Despite its grain structure growth in the heat-affected zone impacting mechanical quality, its mechanical properties are pivotal for automotive and agricultural industries. It reliably resists corrosion from exhaust gases and high-temperature environments, prioritizing mechanical properties over aesthetics, making it less suitable for decorative applications.
