Titanium Welded Pipes
DaXun specializes in manufacturing high-quality titanium welded pipes with diameters starting from 12.7mm to 38.1mm (0.47 in to 1.5 in) and wall thicknesses ranging from 0.4mm to 1.65mm (0.016 in to 0.065 in, depending on diameter). These pipes can extend up to 25000mm in length and are engineered using Gr1, Gr2, and Gr12 titanium alloys, making them ideal for engineering and chemical industries. INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the most widely recognized and utilized titanium alloy. This exceptional duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy leverages aluminum as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer, making it a powerhouse of strength and versatility. Remarkably, it maintains its high performance even at cryogenic temperatures of around 800°F (427°C). The ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy finds critical applications in annealing, solution treatment, and aging processes. It is the go-to material for manufacturing compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines, as well as for constructing fuselage and space capsule components, pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and essential forgings that demand a high strength-to-weight ratio.
  • The initial melting of the alloy is accomplished through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequently, the alloy undergoes one or two vacuum arc remelting steps to ensure its superior quality.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing at 1,700 - 1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is preferred when high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength are required.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers multiple heat treatment options:
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool
  • The solution treated and aged condition yields the best properties. Rapid quenching of small cross-sections ensures optimal results. However, larger sections or a delay in quenching may result in suboptimal properties.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34. In the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at a temperature of 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For the best results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended during forging.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is renowned for its challenging formability at room temperature, even post-annealing. As a consequence, demanding forming processes such as bending or stretching are best executed on annealed material, reaching temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is an ideal technique, effective within a temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy exhibits excellent machinability when treated similarly to austenitic stainless steels, utilizing slow speeds, heavy feeds, and robust
    tooling, complemented by substantial quantities of non-chlorinated cutting fluid to ensure smooth operations.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube is highly weldable, whether in annealed, solution treated, or partially aged forms, maintaining its integrity post-weld with appropriate aging treatments.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is essential, and stringent measures should be taken to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield protecting the molten metal and surrounding hot zone. Spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be accomplished without requiring a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy must be meticulously handled to prevent hydrogen contamination from improper pickling, as well as absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination may impair ductility, compromising notch sensitivity and forming properties.

This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy leverages aluminum as the alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. It is a high-strength alloy capable of functioning at low temperatures around 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is specialized for annealing, solution treating, and aging. It finds applications in compressor blades, disks, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure vessels; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and critical forgings where a high strength-to-weight ratio is paramount.
The alloy undergoes initial melting through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM), with remelting typically achieved via one or two vacuum arc steps.

Heat Treatment

Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is recommended when high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength are desired.
DAXUN 6-4 Grade 5 Titanium Tube is versatile in its heat treatment capabilities, allowing for a variety of methods to achieve desired properties.
1. Annealing: Maintain temperatures of 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by cooling in air or furnace.
2. Stress Relief Annealing: Achieve stress relief with temperatures of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for durations ranging from 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
3. Solution Heat Treating: Perform solution treatment at temperatures between 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench.
4. Aging: Allow for aging at temperatures of 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, concluding with air cooling.

Optimum Properties

Optimal properties are achieved in small cross sections via rapid quenching in the solution-treated and aged condition. Larger cross sections or delayed quenching may result in reduced properties.

Hardness

In the annealed condition, typical hardness is Rockwell C 30-34. In the solution-treated and aged condition, hardness increases to approximately Rockwell C 35-39.

Forgeability/Formability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5, is forged at an initial temperature of 1,750°F (954°C) with final forging at 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended to achieve optimal results.

The tube is difficult to form at room temperature, even when annealed. Severe forming such as bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without altering mechanical properties. Creep forming is suitable for hot sizing/forming at 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

Machinability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5, can be machined using techniques for austenitic stainless steels. Employ slow speeds, high feeds, good tool rigidity, and ample non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

Weldability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5, welds readily in annealed or solution-treated and partially aged conditions. Aging is completed during post-weld heat treatment.

Take precautions to avoid contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen during welding. Fusion welding should be done in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5, may risk hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. This can reduce ductility and affect notch sensitivity and formability.
