CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless steel rod

  • 316L stainless steel offers superior resistance to corrosion compared to 304, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.
    The higher levels of chromium and molybdenum enhance its durability in corrosive environments.
  • It is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings and can experience stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
  • This grade is considered resistant to potable water with up to about 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C), offering versatile protection in various conditions.
  • Often hailed as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it provides robust performance but is not recommended for use in warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • 316L delivers excellent oxidation resistance, enduring up to 1600°F (870°C) in intermittent service and 1700°F (925°C) in continuous service.
  • Grade 316L is particularly adept at resisting carbide precipitation, enhancing its durability.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Exhibits outstanding weldability through all standard fusion techniques, both with and without the use of filler metals.
  • For Grade 316, post-weld annealing is crucial for maximum corrosion resistance, whereas Grade 316L doesn't require this step.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The ideal annealing temperature range is 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • It cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
  • Special consideration is necessary to accommodate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for best results.
  • Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L stainless steel rods are extremely tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
    They can be bent without difficulty, but severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stress.
  • Severe cold forming should be followed by annealing to remove any induced stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • 316/316L stainless steel rods are more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to their toughness.
  • Machining these materials requires cutting tools with chip breakers and curlers to handle tough and strong chip characteristics.
  • For optimal results, employ large tools and ample cutting fluid.
  • Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract rapid work hardening.
  • Heavy positive feeds at low speeds should be considered as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
