GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a high-performance, two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, boasting 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, it offers double the yield strength of typical austenitic grades, outstanding fatigue strength, and unmatched resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion in severe conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 excels in corrosion resistance, surpassing 316 and 316L in most environments.
- This unique composition also delivers high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in both oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Duplex 2205 is resilient to chloride stress corrosion cracking, withstanding temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite phase enhances performance in caustic environments, ensuring long-lasting reliability.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 displays excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- It is susceptible to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations. Therefore, its use is not recommended above these temperatures.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 offers commendable weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature for Duplex 2205 ranges from 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though it does exhibit work-hardening properties.
- Attention is required to accommodate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, minimizing risks of warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, ensure even heating to avoid cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates impressive formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even when equipment possesses adequate power, considerations for higher spring-back, due to the grade's robustness, must be factored in.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, demanding higher cutting forces and resulting in quicker tool wear. Essential machining guidelines include: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with strong, stable tool and workpiece mounting, B) Minimize vibration by maintaining short tool extensions, C) Opt for a nose radius on the tool, no longer than necessary, ensuring a sharp edge with sufficient strength for carbides, and D) Design sequences to ensure the depth of cut penetrates beneath any work-hardened layers from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, enhancing its performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. The alloy's balanced austenite/ferrite microstructure and alloying elements grant it superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 can withstand oxidation up to 980°C for specific applications but may become brittle between 300°C and 1000°C over prolonged exposures. This versatile material is available in strip, coil, and sheet forms, suitable for a myriad of applications.
Commonly Used Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil varies based on cold rolling processing methods and subsequent surface treatments. Available finishes include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, and polished bright, among others:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling, removing black oxide scale formed during these processes. The No. 1 surface is silver-white and matte, primarily used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant applications where high surface gloss isn't necessary, such as the alcohol and chemical industries, and large containers.
- 2B: Unlike the 2D surface, the 2B surface is smoothened with a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This adaptable surface is widely used across various industries, including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, and is used for applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel enhance the strength and hardness through cold working methods like rolling. Following cold rolling, the hard material is gently rolled without subsequent annealing, resulting in the TR hard surface.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip will be bright annealed. A continuous annealing line can be used to quickly cool the strip. The stainless steel strip travels along the line at a speed of 60-80m/min. After this process, the surface finish will be 2H re-rolled bright.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface has a good polishing effect and is brighter than No. 3. It can also be obtained by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, and then polishing the processed surface with a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The tool measures the surface roughness (Ra) between 0.2 and 1.5μm. The No. 4 surface is widely used in restaurants and cooking equipment, medical equipment, architectural decoration, containers and other applications.
- HL: The HL surface is often called a hairline finish. The Japanese JIS standard specifies a continuous hairline abrasive surface obtained by polishing with a 150-240# abrasive belt. The restrictions under the Chinese GB3280 standard are unclear. HL surface finish is commonly used for architectural decoration, such as elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is further polished on the basis of No. 4 with a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive material specified in the GB2477 standard. The surface has good metallic luster, softness, weak reflection, and no imaging. Due to its good performance, it is very suitable for curtain walls, tassel decoration, and cooking supplies.
- BA: BA is a surface that is brightly heat treated after cold rolling. Bright heat treatment is annealing in a protective atmosphere to ensure that the surface is not oxidized and retain the gloss of the cold-rolled surface, and then it is polished with a high-precision smooth roller to improve the surface brightness. The instrument evaluates the surface roughness to be 0.05-0.1μm, indicating that the surface is close to a mirror surface. BA surfaces can be used in a variety of applications, including food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorations.
- No. 8: Mirror surface, maximum reflectivity, no abrasive particles. The stainless steel deep processing industry also refers to 8K board. BA material is often used as raw material for mirror processing. It only needs to be polished. The surface is beautiful after mirror processing and is often used in building entrances and interior decoration.
