Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy engineered for nickel conservation. It offers a cost-effective alternative to conventional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, substituting nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be hardened through heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Initially non-magnetic when annealed, Type 201 becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is ideal for appliances, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, and more. However, due to its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, it is not always suitable for outdoor structural applications, especially in environments exposed to seawater.
