What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel, known for its exceptional durability and strength, is a super duplex steel with low carbon content (up to 0.03%), high chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). This alloy is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications requiring superior strength and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater equipment. It exhibits remarkable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. The high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content ensure outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Manufacturing Duplex 2507 stainless steel involves processes similar to those used for other high-alloy steels. Initially, scrap steel is melted in an electric arc furnace, where the necessary alloys are added. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. This crucial phase includes decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the elimination of dissolved gases.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is added to the molten steel. The steel is then moved to a ladle furnace, where the inclusion levels are finely tuned for optimal performance.
- Post-AOD, the molten steel is sent to the casting phase, producing either solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid forms undergo further refinement through reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a homogeneous internal structure, the steel undergoes a solution annealing heat treatment, followed by a rapid water quenching process.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be done through hot or cold forming processes. Hot forming requires temperatures between 1024 °C and 1232 °C, followed by solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C and a fast water quench. Cold forming processes include bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, necessitating subsequent solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel stands out as a super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure comprising equal parts ferrite and austenite. This balanced structure imparts high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical strength. Different grades of duplex stainless steel, however, offer varying levels of corrosion resistance. While all have excellent localized corrosion resistance, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the exact resistance depends on the grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized by their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number), with super duplex grades like Duplex 2507 having a PREN range of 38 to 45.
