Type 321 stainless steel is an austenitic steel known for its enhanced titanium and carbon content, providing remarkable corrosion and oxidation resistance, even at cryogenic temperatures. Unlike Type 304, Type 321 contains titanium, which prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zones of welds, offering partial protection against intergranular corrosion and reducing embrittlement. This makes 321 stainless steel ideal for applications exposed to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) in corrosive environments. It features more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts with carbon to prevent the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, maintaining its corrosion-resistant properties. General Properties

• 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a premium titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel known for exceptional overall corrosion resistance. Engineered to withstand intergranular corrosion in the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C), it also resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C). This alloy offers superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steels while maintaining good low-temperature toughness.
• The 321H Stainless Steel Tube (UNS S32109) is a high-carbon variant (0.04 - 0.10) of this alloy, crafted for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures above 1000°F (537°C). The carbon content in the plate typically supports dual certification, making it versatile for demanding applications.

Corrosion Resistance

• Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel.
• Developed for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
• Operative in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
• Resistant to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service environments.
• Suitable for use in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
• Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even in minor concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.

Processing

Alloy 321 and 321H can be easily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices.

Hot Forming

• For forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes, recommended working temperatures are between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• This alloy is not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
• After hot working, the material must be water quenched or fully annealed to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

Cold Forming

• Alloy 321 is quite ductile and forms easily, making it suitable for a variety of applications.

Welding

• This alloy can be readily welded using most standard processes.
• Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary, simplifying fabrication.

Machining

• The hardening rate of Alloy 321 is higher than 410 stainless steel, making it less machinable but similar to 304.
