CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless Steel Rod
- This alloy showcases superior resistance compared to 304 in an array of atmospheric conditions and corrosive environments, thanks to its elevated chromium
and molybdenum content. - However, it may be prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings, and stress corrosion cracking beyond 122°F (50°C).
- It is considered resilient in potable water with chloride levels up to approx. 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
140°F (60°C). - Frequently regarded as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' but it is not impervious to warm seawater.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L is notably more resistant to carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Offers exceptional weldability through all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
- Post-weld annealing of heavy welded sections in Grade 316 is recommended for peak corrosion resistance; this process is not necessary for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The optimal annealing temperature spans from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
- Special consideration should be given to account for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Most manufacturers advise a maximum forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for best results.
- Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L Stainless Steel Rods are highly tough and ductile, allowing for effortless cold working procedures such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
bending, and more. - Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve induced stresses.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Type 316/316L Stainless Steel Rods present more challenges in machining compared to Type 304, due to their toughness.
- 316/316L exhibits chip characteristics that are notably tough and robust.
- Utilizing chip breakers and curlers is highly recommended.
- Employing the largest possible tool and copious amounts of cutting fluid is advised.
- Heavy, positive feeds at low speeds should be used, considering 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
