Grade 409
- Grade 409, a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, is a versatile and general-purpose chromium stainless steel. Primarily utilized in automotive exhaust systems, it excels in applications that demand superior mechanical qualities, robust corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability, rather than aesthetic appeal, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- In compliance with ASTM standards, such as ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, specific designations like S40910, S40920, and S40930 are now utilized as 'sub-grades' instead of the generic grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees using titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Each can be certified under S40900 (Grade 409). Notably, ASTM A268M designates the standard Grade 409 for tubing.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 demonstrates resilience against atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. Typically, a light surface rust forms which halts further corrosion, although this rust isn't suited for cosmetic uses. Its corrosion resistance is similar to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades like 410, but falls short of the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C. These temperature thresholds can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat to 790-900°C, then cool with air. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- 409 stainless steel is easy to weld. Pre-heating at 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, creating a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C can enhance weld ductility.
Small section welding typically doesn't require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is often welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To minimize grain formation issues, conduct all welding with minimal heat input.
Typical Applications
Ideal for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M specifies additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products might include similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Type 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretched, and drawn. Its formability is very akin to that of carbon steel.
